About Me
In real life I'm Alli, a student currently majoring in secondary education: history with a minor in medieval studies. Yay! Random facts - I'm a triplet, I'm on cast at MIRF, and a member of the IWG.
At fest I'm Lady Kathryn Blakeley, a maid of honour to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Call me Kat/Kate/Katie - I will respond to any of them. (Kate is what everyone usually calls me, but then Queenie called me Katie during the last season and then at BARF she called me Kat which threw me off because she never called me Kat. *shrug*) I'm just lookin for true love, not some 70 year old noble with no teeth. Ewww.

So I've been wanting to make an effigy corset for what seems like FOREVER and I think I've finally gathered up the guts to actually make one! (Having the Tudor Tailor helps too )
At first I thought that maybe I'd make it out of linen because well, most people I've seen (and know) use it and it'd be slightly cheaper to make than if I used, say, silk! But I really wanted to make it out of silk.
So I was browsing the interwebs and I found THIS!
Just put some green binding on and what do I have?
A WATERMELON CORSET!! *gigglesnort*
I've got the silk ordered and linen for the lining. I'm looking for just the right green color for the binding. I'll post pics with updates!
Just need to not mess it up! *hopes not to jinx self*
Ok so I've figured out that I am probably not going to have enough fabric to make sleeves out of my forepart fabric. So I was wandering around the interwebs looking at fabric when I came across this website.
And looking at the fabric I started to think of maybe if I found a red silk that sorta matched my forepart color I could use that instead. But then I saw THIS!!!!
IT IS GORGEOUS! I decided immediately that I had to have some. At least for a caul (cuz I'm making myself a new hat this year and my snood kinda died...) But then Jeni gave me an idea. What if I used the slate blue velveteen I used for the "guards" of my bodice and overskirt for sleeves and then slashed or pinked to show the lining of that sexy silk?
So list of things to do when I get back from Israel for fest
I know it's been awhile since my last update. I've been busy, mostly homeworking. :P
So Bay Area Ren Fest (a month ago! wow!)was so much fun! :D We drove down, had tons of fun and then sadly Monday morning had to drive back home. We managed to beat most of a major snow storm driving up 75. We only hit the bad weather in northern Kentucky, through Ohio and into Michigan. I crashed for a bit with a friend before heading out into the snowy western part of the state.
Unfortunately from the trip there were 2 pics from the day I wore the new dress. In both I am looking rather stupid and neither are full length shots. We forgot the cameras/camera battery because of our late wake-up Sunday morning. It is kind of upsetting though. There was a guy pretty much following court the whole time and he couldn't seem to get a decent shot of me? I think this means i need to stop hanging around the pretty people when I go to other faires. :P Oh well I suppose. We'll get some good ones this season I'm sure. :) And I'm thinking of another hat...I like the pillbox but I was always squinting if I didn't have my parasol open and I'd like something with a little brim at least...maybe an Italian bonnet or something fun. :)
Frankenfeast is just around the corner! I probably won't wear the new court garb mainly because I'll be driving from Kzoo and my hoops are still in an unsuccessful McGuyver state. That means I totally improvised with the connectors since they were out at home depot and failed miserably.
All in all life is going pretty well. :) Nothing really exciting though but that'll change soon I think. I totally missed the memo that Humans vs Zombies was this week. Oh well, I'll do it next semester.
After getting back from class I decided that I really just needed to get this dress done so I wouldn't have to worry about it this weekend, especially since I have a few tests next week before I leave. So here, without the forepart hemmed (I'm getting that done after this), is the mostly finished gown! :D My suitemate took some fun pics that I like - one of me putting my hat on while watching Mythbusters and another of me sitting in the middle of the room and in both I'm paying no attention whatsoever. :P
On the Bar-Mitzvah : I do have to go. But hopefully it is just for Saturday. His services are on Friday night and his party is a luncheon. If I can bribe one of my cousins to drive me to the airport in Albany Saturday around 1, I can make it to Detroit for Sunday at least. Apparently Mom is only making me go because my Aunt is still angry that one of my cousins couldn't make her eldest's bar-mitzvah a few years ago because he couldn't get off of work. *rolls eyes* And I thought my Aunt was the only normal one in my family. I was wrong...
On new garb : I'm almost done!! YAY!!! Just have to add waist tabs, hem the forepart, hooks and eyes to the overskirt, add lacing for the bodice and a placket and I AM DONE! :D Oh yeah, and fix my bloomers because the elastic in the legs broke last season while putting pj pants on underneath them for extra warmth that one really cold morning. Here is what I've got all haphazardly thrown onto my dress dummy
I'm really proud of this dress so far. *knock on wood* It hasn't given me too much trouble, it looks good, I'm still obsessed with how good the back of the bodice looks :P, and I'm so excited to take it out and about in Florida. :D Still need to figure out what to do with my hair...undecided about either putting it all in the hat or putting it half up and doing something with the rest...not sure...
Anywhoodle - I've got to go to my last class. Laters!
